Fuerteventura Landmarks and Monuments: American Star Shipwreck - Playa de Garcey, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain
Standing just off the secluded Playa de Garcey beach, on the western side of Fuerteventura, the rusting American Star Shipwreck is one of the island's most haunting and eerie landmarks. Once a major ocean liner in the USA, appearing in the Elvis Presley film 'GI Blues', the American Star was destined to become a luxury floating hotel in Thailand. Whilst being towed to its final destination in 1994, the American Star broke free during a major storm and ended up grounding itself on the coastline of Fuerteventura, splitting in half. Although the wreck appears extremely close and inviting, exploration is very dangerous, as much debris lies around the liner. In Fuerteventura's capital city, the Caféteria el Naufragio contains many pieces of furniture and fittings salvaged from the ship.
